Maroons Roll past Emory & Henry, 104-87

The men's basketball team defeated Emory & Henry, 104-87 at the Bast Center on Wednesday evening. The Maroons improved to 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the ODAC. The Wasps dropped to 6-14, 2-11 in ODAC play.
Roanoke enjoyed arguably their finest night on a stat sheet all season, with four team season-highs on the night. The Maroons shot 54-percent from the floor as they scored a season-high 104 points. Roanoke out-rebounded the Wasps, 56-43, which was both the highest total and margin (+13) of the season. They dished out a season-high 30 assists which doubled their season average, led by Keith Carter with a career-high nine on the night. In addition, the Maroons also had a season-best 18 steals which doubled their season average, led by Zach Milton with a career-high six steals.
The Maroons led 52-40 at the half as they shot 56-percent from the field. Curtis Peery capped a 15-6 run late in the half on a lay-up to give his team a 41-26 lead with 2:26 remaining in the half. Salem grads Peery and Melvin Felix combined for 26 points off 12-of-18 from the floor in the first half. Both must have EHC's number as they combined for 48 points on Jan. 9 and 43 points tonight.
Roanoke coasted during the second half as the Maroons held the Wasps to 37-percent from the field and 36.3% for the game. The Maroons are nationally-ranked in defensive field goal percentage (9th/38.3) and held them under their season average over a solid shooting team in Emory & Henry. The Wasps, who leads the nation in scoring, were held to their second-lowest point total of the season.
Roanoke scored a season-best 78 points in the paint and outscored E&H in fast break points (20-2), points off turnovers (28-20) and second chance points, 19-14.
The Maroons were led by Peery with 26 points and eight rebounds. He performance was followed by Felix with 17 points. Milton scored 16 points, six steals, five assists and four rebounds. AJ Dowell scored 12 points along with seven rebounds and four assists. Carter had seven points, nine assists and three steals to pace the Maroons.
Josh LaPorte had a game-high 13 rebounds, which passed Everett Hurst '72 for fourth all-time in rebounding at Roanoke. He now has 761 for his career.
Kyle Huckins led the Wasps with 18 points and five rebounds. Andrew Hart finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Robert Hudson chipped in 10 points.
The men return to action this weekend as they travel to both Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan. The Maroons are 71-65 against the Yellow Jackets, but have only one win (79-58 in the ODAC Tournament last season) since 2001. They are 1-15 in the last six years vs. the Yellow Jackets. Mike Rhodes is 16-4 against Roanoke in seven years at RMC.
The Maroons lead the all-time series vs. Virginia Wesleyan, 26-25 with the Marlins having the most recent success. VWC won the last six meetings before being upset by the Maroons, 68-67 at home on 12/1. They hold a 15-5 advantage since 1998, 10-4 since David Macedo has been at the helm (2000). Prior to 1998, the Maroons were 20-10 against their ODAC rival.
Game time vs. RMC is Saturday at 2 p.m. and VWC on Sunday at 2 p.m.
