Box Score Greensboro, N.C. --- The women's basketball team defeated Guilford, 70-56 at the Ragan-Brown Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 13-9 overall and 11-6 in the ODAC. The Quakers dropped to 10-13, 5-13 in the ODAC.
Sophomore
Caitlyn Long and Senior
Erin Hanson combined for 32 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Maroons. Long led the team with 17 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Hanson finished with 15 points and nine rebounds in addition to three assists. She hit all 10 of her free-throw attempts, which was a season-high.
The Maroons outscored the Quakers, 21-9 off the bench, led by freshman
Jordan Gholson with nine points in addition to two blocked shots. Roanoke outscored Guilford, 20-11 points off turnovers and 30-16 in the paint. The women won the rebound battle, 48-32 for the 15
th time this season. It was the seventh time the Maroons had a plus-10 rebounding margin. The 48 rebounds were also a season-best for Roanoke.
The Maroons held the Quakers to 36% shooting for the game. The Maroons hit 79% from the free throw line. Guilford shot 46% from beyond the arc.
Guilford jumped out to a 10-4 lead to start the game.
Torri Bridge gave the Maroons their first lead of the game, 18-16 off a three-pointer to end a 14-6 run with 11:30 remaining in the first half.
A three-pointer by Jessica Castro gave the Quakers a 24-23 lead with 5:14 remaining in the half. It would be their final lead of the game as Long hit a three-pointer and a conventional three-point play to give the Maroons the lead for good. They outscored the Quakers, 15-7 to end the half, 38-31.
The Maroons built their lead to 12 after a made free throw by Gholson to make the score, 48-36 with 13:10 left. The Quakers responded with a 10-2 run to close their deficit to within four points, 50-46 with 8:33 remaining.
Roanoke pulled away late, using an 18-5 run to seal their 13
th win of the season. Hanson hit six-straight free-throws while junior
Erin Jenkins scored all five of her points during that stretch.
Hanson passed Vickie Zimmerman '86 for fourth all-time on the Maroons career scoring list (1,395). She also became the sixth player in school history to grab 700 rebounds in a career. Long's two three-pointers tied Lindsey Reynolds '06 for ninth all-time (70). She needs two more to pass Katrina Williams for 10th for three-pointers in a single-season.
Ann Seufer paced the Quakers with 19 points. Tracey Croner and Lauren LeFevers added 10 points apiece.
The women return to action on Tues. Feb. 19 as they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. against Bridgewater. The Maroons are 43-24 all-time vs. the Eagles, including the last four meetings. The women won, 67-48 at home on Jan. 15. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
