The women's basketball team lost to Christopher Newport, 75-60 in Bast Gym on Wednesday in non-conference action. The Maroons dropped their fourth-straight game and fell to 4-6 while the Captains improved to 6-2 on the season. CNU have won the last three meetings against Roanoke and tied the all-time series, 8-8.
The difference was down low, as the Captains outrebounded Roanoke, 45-27, the worst rebounding margin for the Maroons all season. CNU also outscored the women, 48-23 in the paint. CNU shot 55-percent from the floor for the game, which mainly came from Chelsie Schweers and Colandra Rollins.
The Maroons jumped out to an early lead off an
Erin Hanson jumper to make it 4-2. It would be their last lead of the game as the Captains went on a 9-0 run to regain the lead for good, 11-4 with 13:30 in the first half.
Senior forward
Sara Keller capped an 8-3 run with a lay-up to cut the Maroon deficit to within three, 15-12.
CNU extended their lead to 15 over the next eight minutes as they responded with a 22-10 run to make it 37-22 with 1:44 remaining in the half. They took a 39-24 lead into the half.
The Maroons settled down and played steadier in the second half, holding the Captains to a 36-36 tie. The women, however, couldn't erase the 15-point first half deficit as they didn't get closer than 12 the rest of the game.
As a team, the Maroons outscored the CNU bench, 31-3 in addition to 28-15 off turnovers. They were held to a season-low 27 rebounds and shot 37-percent from the floor tonight.
Keller played better in her third-straight start, scoring a team-high 10 points which tied a career-high. The Delaware, OH native has increased her scoring total over the last five games. She shot 4-of-5 from the field and pulled down three rebounds.
Senior guard
Torri Bridge scored seven points, dished out four assists and a career-high five steals.
Jaleesa Osborne had six points, four assists and a season-high five steals.
Caitlyn Long finished with nine points including hitting 2-of-4 from three-point range. Hanson had a season-low six points but led the team with 10 rebounds and four assists.
Schweers led all scorers with 28 points and six rebounds for the Captains. Rollins poured in 21 points and 13 rebounds in addition to four steals. Both played the entire game.
The Maroons will resume ODAC play as they host Washington & Lee at home on Jan. 11. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Roanoke is 25-2 all-time vs. the Generals, but W & L have split with the Maroons during the last two seasons. W&L won the last meeting, 55-50 in Lexington, VA on Feb. 3, 2007.
