ASHLAND, VA--Roanoke College senior
Jon Mason scored four goals in a men's lacrosse 11-3 victory at Randolph-Macon on Wednesday to become the program's all-time leading scorer. Mason and the Maroons improve to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with the win, which was their sixth consecutive. Randolph-Macon falls to 6-6, 1-3 in the conference. Roanoke's win also secures a spot in the upcoming ODAC tournament.
With the Maroons leading 9-2 after three quarters of play, Mason scored the first goal of the fourth period to tie Bonasera's all-time record of 264 points. After the Yellow Jackets scored a man-up goal, Mason got the record-setting point with the final goal of the game. Following his four-point day, Mason has 265 points on 230 goals and 35 assists. Mason, who is also the team's all-time leading goal scorer, breaks the record Bonasera had established in 2003.
The Maroons outshot the Yellow Jackets 54-27 in the contest and never trailed. Mason opened the scoring with 11:45 left in the first quarter, while freshman
Pat March gave the Maroons a 2-0 lead with 9:07 to play in the first 15 minutes. Both goals came off of
Chaz Carlson assists. Carlson finished the day with six points on three goals and sixr assists. His six points tied a single-game career high.
Roanoke goalie
Jake Dorsey stopped a career and season-best 12 shots while allowing just three goals against. The Maroons won 14 of the 18 face-offs, with both
Billy Cameron and
Josh Rea winning seven each. The Maroon defense has now allowed just three goals in the last two games and held the Yellow Jackets to just 27 total shots. Randolph-Macon Brian Vierheller made 18 saves, including six in the third quarter.
The Maroons are back in action on Saturday as they host the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College. The game in Salem, VA begins at approximately at 2:00pm. It will follow the Roanoke women's game against Greensboro which is a 12:00pm start.
