MAROONS GET FIRST SHUTOUT SINCE 1984 SEASON

Box Score GREENSBORO, NC--For the first time since Roanoke College head coach Bill Pilat was the program's starting junior goalie, the college's men's lacrosse team posted a shutout, beating Guilford College 20-0 on Saturday in Greensboro, NC. The Maroons improve to 10-4 with the win and 3-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Maroons reach 10 wins for the fifth consecutive season. Guilford is now 2-8, 0-5 in the ODAC.

The last Roanoke men's lacrosse shutout came on March 14, 1984 and was a 17-0 win over Randolph-Macon College. Saturday's shutout is also the program's fifth. The team also shutout VMI in 1972, NC State in 1974, and Hampden-Sydney in 1976.

The Maroons wasted no time in Saturday's win, scoring a goal just 30 seconds in. The game-winning goal came off of the stick of senior attackman Jon Mason on a Pat March assist. The goal was the first of six Mason would score on the day and the first of his seven total points. With the seven points, Mason moved into sole possession of second place on Roanoke's all-time scoring list. Mason has 261 career points, surpassing Paul Goldsmith who had 258. Mason is also just three points shy of tying Andy Bonasera's program-record 264 career points.

The Maroon defense limited the Quakers to just 10 total shots in the game. The most shots the Quakers were able to get off in a quarter was four, that in the second. The Maroon defense also forced its goalies to make just five saves in the game. Starter Jake Dorsey had four, while reserve Ryan Sasscer had one. Sophomore defender Sam Love led all players with seven groundballs, while freshman Steve Simmons had six and also added an assist.

Eleven different Maroons had goals in the game, including Matt Nicola who also had an assist. Adam Ariosa and Dan Cochran also scored for the Maroons, as did freshman Tim Hamernick, his first college score. Josh Rea won 10 of his 13 face-off attempts to up his season percentage to 66.4%.

The Maroons are back in action on Wednesday at ODAC rival Randolph-Macon. A win on Wednesday would assure the Maroons a spot in the upcoming conference tournament. The game in Ashland, VA begins at 4:00pm.
