HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA--Trailing by three goals on two different occasions, the seventh-ranked Roanoke College men's lacrosse team rallied for an 11-10 at #15 Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday. The Maroons, who win at Hampden-Sydney for the first time since 2000, improve to 7-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Tigers fall to 3-3, 0-1 in league play. Roanoke has won four straight games over the Tigers, dating to the 2004 season.
Hampden-Sydney opened the game dictating the pace, scoring the first three goals, that in the first five minutes of the game. William Shell opened the scoring on a back-door cut pass from Vince Smith. Smith gave HSC a two lead on a similar play. Down 2-0, the Maroons turned the ball over on a clear attempt. With keeper
Matt Madalon out of the crease, Smith was able to move the ball to Shell who scored the easy goal, that with 10:26 left.
The Maroons owned the rest of the quarter, scoring the final three.
Adam Leahy scored Roanoke's first goal, sweeping to his left.
Scott Pattison brought the Maroons to within one, cutting from behind the cage and finishing a pass from
Chris Keating.
Zack Thomas then got the first of his five goals to even the score at three with 49 seconds left. The Maroons outshot Hampden-Sydney 20-7 in the first quarter.
Hampden-Sydney sophomore Thomas Jennings gave the home team the lead again, scoring on a shot from about 10 yards out. Less than a minute later, Roanoke's
Jon Mason even things up again, scoring off of a loose ball situation, on a behind-the-back goal. The goal was Mason's 146th of his career, setting a Roanoke College career record. The Tigers took a 5-4 lead heading into the break on an Eamon Thorton score with just 48 seconds left.
Smith gave the Tigers a 6-4 lead early in the third, taking a fastbreak pass from John Pritzlaff. After the goal, Pritzlaff was penalized for having an illegal pocket on his stick. The goal counted, but Roanoke went a man-up for a minute. On the man-up chance, Thomas scored to bring RC to within one. With the HSC goalie out of the crease, Thomas took a shot that was stopped by a defender, but he was able to corral the rebound and stick in Roanoke's fifth goal.
Shell scored on an HSC man-up chance, on a cross-crease pass from Michael Via, and defender Ian York scored on a fastbreak and the Maroons were behind 8-5 with 8:58 left in the third. Thomas scored his third goal with 8:58, and Keating scored an unassisted goal on a fastbreak with 5:05 left and RC was to within one, 8-7. Roanoke's
Matt Duke gave the Maroons their first lead of the game with his only goal, that at 10:46 of the fourth, and Thomas scored the final of his five goals to give the Maroons an 11-9 lead with 5:16 to play. The Tigers closed out the scoring on a Vince Smith diving goal with 2:20 to go. The Maroons were called for an 30 second offside penalty with just 17 seconds left in the game, but the Maroons did not give up a score.
The Maroons host Randolph-Macon College at 1:00pm next Saturday afternoon in another Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup.
