Box Score GREENSBORO, NC--For the first time in its history, the Roanoke College men's lacrosse, ranked fourth in this week's USILA Division III coaches poll, team improved to 9-1, that with a 14-6 win at Guilford College on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, NC. In addition to their overall record, the Maroons also improve to 4-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Guilford falls to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the ODAC. Roanoke's previous best start to a season was an 8-1 record during the 1978 season.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first five minutes of the game, the Maroons gained control of the tempo, scoring the next three goals to lead 3-1 after one.
Jon Mason scored two of the three goals in the first and with the second matched his goal total from the entire 2004 season, 41.
Dan Reed scored the other goal for the Maroons in the period, his 14th of the year.
In between the first and second periods, the Maroons were called for an illegal crosse, giving the Quakers a three-minute, non-releasable, man-up opportunity. Brian Borchard scored just 28 seconds into the second half to make the score 3-2, but the Maroons scored two consecutive man-down goals to go up 5-2.
Chris Keating had the first of the goals and Mason scored his third of the game, that off of a Keating assist. Freshman
Zack Thomas scored the final two goals of the second period, giving the Maroons a 7-2 lead at the break.
Tug Schroeder opened the scoring in the second half for the Maroons to push their lead out to 8-2, but the Quakers, on an Ed Massello score, made the score 8-3 about three minutes later. Reed and Schroeder answered back for the Maroons, making the score 10-3. Mason assisted on Schroeder's score, his third assist of the season. Borchard tallied twice to end the third for the Quakers, sending the game into the fourth with the Maroons on top, 10-5.
Mason scored his 44th and 45th goals of the season, just seven seconds apart, to open the third, both coming on assists from Schroeder. Borchard again had an answer for the Quakers, netting his fourth goal of the game, to make the score 12-6. Keating and freshman
Matt Duke scored late for Roanoke, making the final score 14-6.
The Maroons held a sizable 64-27 lead in the shots column, but had trouble getting the ball past Guilford goalie Andrew Vigne who made a career-high 26 saves. The Maroons also won 18 of the 23 face-offs, had 28 more groundballs than the Quakers, and forced the host team into 18 failed clears.
Schroeder finished the game with a career-high seven points on two goals and five assists. Mason tallied five goals and added the assist, while Thomas, Reed, and Keating all scored twice.
Billy Cameron won 16 of the 20 face-offs which he took, while junior
Ben Love set a new career-high with 11 groundballs.
Matt Madalon made 13 saves in goal for the Maroons, five in both the first and fourth.
The Maroons are back in action on Sunday afternoon in road game against the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College. The game in Ashland, VA begins at 12:00pm.
