WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS SHORT AT GUILFORD

GREENSBORO, NC-The Roanoke College women's basketball team fell to 5-9 overall on the season and 4-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference following a 64-50 loss at Guilford College on Wednesday night in Greensboro, NC. The Maroons have now lost two consecutive games and four of the past six. Guilford, which completes the regular season sweep of the Maroons, snaps a three-game losing streak and improves to 8-6 overall, 6-4 in the league. The Quakers have also now won seven straight games over the Maroons.

Lindsay Reynolds gave Roanoke an early 3-2 lead with one of her two three-point field goals in the contest, but the Quakers went on a 21-5 run over the next 10 minutes to take complete control of the game. Reynolds was able to get two free throws and Cindy McGraw hit a jumper for Roanoke's lone points during the run. By the end of the first half, the Maroons had managed just six field goals and 19 points. Guilford held the 29-19 lead at the break, that after the Maroons used a 4-1 run late in the half to cut the lead to as little as eight points.

Roanoke came out much stronger in the second half of play, trimming the host's lead to six points on back-to-back jumpers from Kayce Smith. The Quakers again pushed the lead out to 15 points, that at 39-24 with 15:55 to play, but sparked in part by another Reynolds three, the Maroons again closed to within six points. Brittany Johnson and Chandra Forrester each had two points in the run. Trailing by nine, 44-35, the Maroons closed to within three, 44-41, when Annie Roehm came off the bench to drill consecutive three-point field goals. Out of a Guilford timeout, the Maroons again cut into the lead, this time on Emily Smith free throws to make the score 44-43.

After Guilford made one of two free throws at the other end, Roanoke's Jennie Schafer tied the score at 45 with two successful charity shots of her own. The Quakers, however, quickly responded with two straight three-pointers and the Maroons could not get to within any closer of five points again.

Roanoke's problems from the floor continued on Wednesday, with the team also being hurt by turnovers and a lack of defensive rebounding. The team shot just 37 percent from the field, actually six percentage points better than Guilford, but took 32 fewer shots than its host after committing 26 turnovers and giving up 19 Guilford offensive rebounds. The Quakers finished the contest 22-for-69 from the field, while Roanoke was able to connect on just 14 of their 37 shots from the floor.
Roehm finished with 11 points to place the Maroons, while Reynolds chipped in 10. Two Quakers reached double-figures in the scoring column. Guilford also turned the ball over 16 fewer times than the Maroons.

Roanoke is back in action on Friday evening in a home contest against the Wildcats of Randolph-Macon Woman's College. The game at the school's C. Homer Bast center is slated for a 7:00pm start.
