Maroons open season with 3-0 victory

SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College men's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 over Lancaster Bible College in their season opener on Friday night.

How It Happened 

  • The Maroons jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set. They carried that momentum and used a five-point run in the middle of the set to go distance themselves, winning the set 25-19. 

  • RC had two five point runs in the second set to give themselves a little breathing room. They then won the last three points to take the set 25-19. 

  • It was more of a back-and-forth affair in the third set. Roanoke scored the final six points, capping off the night on a Colin Mendoza block, to take the set 25-18. 

Notes and Notables 

  • Senior Cade Kinne led the team in kills with 13 on the night to tie his career high. He also posted a .524 hitting percentage. 

  • Freshman Johnny Moran started his collegiate career off with a team high 19 assists. 

  • Leo Houser was too far behind Moran, adding 16 assists. 

  • In his first game as the starting libero, CJ Kingston led in digs with 10 in the match. 

  • Dominic Wheaton and Colin Mendoza had four blocks each. Wheaton had one solo and three assists while Medoza had two solo blocks and two assists. 

  • Mendoza also posted a .625 hitting percentage for six kills on the night.

RC has the week off before they are back at the Cregger Center for a tri-match on Saturday (Jan. 17) with Shenandoah and the Virginia Tech club team. The squad will take on Shenandoah at 1:00 pm and Viginia Tech at 5:00 pm.
