FOREST, Va. – The Roanoke College wrestling team swept the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) weekly awards Monday, with
Taylor Smith earning Light Weight Wrestler of the week accolades and
Lorenzo Pellot-Vazquez taking home Heavier Weight Wrestler of the Week honors.
Smith, a junior from Mifflintown, Pa., collects his second ODAC weekly honor after posting a nationally-ranked victory during the No. 6 Maroons' 26-15 dual victory over No. 11 Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Following a win by forfeit in Roanoke's 51-0 triumph over Penn College, Smith took to the mat for a highly-rated showdown at 149 pounds with Landon Church. Smith, the No. 5 wrestler in the class in the latest rankings published by the NWCA, earned an 11-2 major decision victory over the Blugold's 15th-ranked competitor.
Pellot-Vazquez, a sophomore from Fairfax, Va., helped nationally sixth-ranked Roanoke defeat No. 11 Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 26-15. The 197-pound class was the final bout of the high-profile dual with the Maroons' leading, 20-15, heading into the showdown between Pellot-Vazquez and Jackson Peak. Pellot-Vazquez closed the event in style, pinning Peak at 5:50 to secure the team victory.
The Maroons (6-0) take part in the NWCA National Duals this weekend at the University of Northern Iowa.
