Women's lacrosse rallies late but falls short in ODAC semifinals

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team put together a huge fourth quarter rally but couldn't find the game tying opportunity as they fell to Shenandoah in the ODAC semifinals.

Game Information
Shenandoah 10, #24 Roanoke 9
Records: Shenandoah (13-6, 8-2), Roanoke (12-7, 8-2)
Location: Winchester, Va. (Aikens Stadium)

How It Happened

  • It was a tie game after the first 15 with the sides knotted a two.

  • Maddie McDonald tallied the first and last goal of the second quarter, but Shenandoah had done some damage in between to make it 7-4 at the half.

  • SU kept their momentum in the third quarter, rattling off three straight goals. Tracey Benzing scored with less than a minute left to shift the tides right before the end of the period though.

  • Benzing's goal was all the Maroons needed to get going as they put up four unanswered goals in the last quarter and threatened with plenty of time left. The squad just couldn't find their way down the field once more to put up a game tying goal.

Notes and Notables

  • Roanoke had eight different goal scorers in the contest.

  • Grace Koutouzis led the squad in points with three on a goal and two assists. Those three points pushed Koutouzis into a tie for fifth in career points with Ali Oglesby '98 in the program record books.

  • Maddie McDonald and Sydney Harrison were the other Maroons with multiple points in the game. Both had two with McDonald tallying two goals and Harrison recording a goal and an assist.

  • McDonald hit the century mark in points with her first goal in the second quarter.

  • Kendall Todd and Amber Stallings both played between the pipes. Todd made two saves in 21 minutes while Stallings made four in 39 minutes of play.

  • Roanoke had the upper hand in shots, 30-22, and ground balls 16-15 while Shenandoah took the slight edge in draw controls 13-10.
