Jensen Cervati and His RC Maroons Unstoppable in Newport News

The team raced in Newport News, VA this past weekend in a well-attended and prestigious race.  The event started with the Points Race on Friday in heavy rain conditions, where every five laps there were points up for grabs to the top finishers. The team executed the plan perfectly and Jensen strategically scooped up more and more points as the race went on. He scored double points on the final lap after a textbook leadout from teammate Michael Gallik, taking the stage win bike lengths ahead of the rest of the competition.

Saturday started off with a five-mile Individual Time Trial in the morning.  This is the first time any of the riders had competed in this type of event, each rider competing alone against the clock. Jensen posted a solid time as did Hays Edmunds and was able to keep close enough to his competitors in the omnium competition going into the third stage. We were confident that with his sprinting abilities and the support of the team backing him, we could take the overall leader's jersey back.

The Criterium Saturday night was the highlight of the weekend with the most impressive teamwork and decisive win of our team's history. We were just a few points out of the leader's jersey and there were mid-race points up for grabs to the winner of a points prime. Jensen went on the attack early, dragging one rider out with him.  Despite the competition latching onto his wheel for the ride, no one was able to overcome the speed and power of Cervati. He took maximum points in the sprint, moving closer to taking the jersey off the back of the current leader.

Alastair Amos rode an exceptional race in support of his teammates, keeping them protected and the race together, always navigating the front of the pack and in perfect position to negate any attacks. We knew we could win if we had Michael and Jensen rested and in position for the final laps. Once again, Michael made his way to the front in the closing laps and drove the pace so fast that no one would dare to pass him, Jensen sitting comfortable and safe on his wheel.

Cervati sensed the moment and launched early, opening up a sprint that left the entire field in his dust.  In front of a street full of inspired and entertained fans, Jensen sat up in victory, pointing to the name on his jersey and officially putting Roanoke College Cycling on the map.

Sunday was a Circuit Race, and we had a comfortable lead in the omnium, but you can never be complacent in bike racing. We knew who the biggest threats were and what the other teams needed to do to beat us.  The plan was to play it safe, be conservative and only move or react if it was a real threat. The race stayed together and came to a field sprint. After a long weekend of racing and a couple of hard-fought battles the days before, we were content with a top five finish on the day and taking the official win in the Omnium of The Tour of Newport News.

Next up, Conference Championships at UVA and then Nationals!!
