Women's basketball utilizes big second half to defeat Hollins

SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College women's basketball team kept the good times rolling on Wednesday night as they picked up another ODAC victory, this time by a score of 69-47 over Hollins.

The victory also secures Roanoke a spot in the eight team ODAC playoffs. The squad currently sits in fifth with only two teams having the potential to pass them in the standings based off of conference records and games remaining.

How It Happened 

  • Hollins jumped out to an 8-0 advantage to start the quarter, but Roanoke hit a pair of threes to keep Hollins from widening the gap. RC then extended their run to 15 points to help them go into the second with a 17-9 lead. 

  • It was a more back and forth quarter in the second. While Hollins outscored Roanoke 13-10 in the period, the Maroons went into the break ahead 27-22. 

  • RC slowly extended their advantage into double figures in the third thanks in part to the performances of Paige Breuer and Abigail Rice in the period. Roanoke went into the final quarter ahead 49-33. 

  • The Maroons kept the momentum in the fourth, outscoring Hollins 20-14 to bring the score to its final of 69-47. 
     

Notes and Notables 

  • 12 different Maroons tallied a point in the game. 

  • Abigail Rice was one shy of her career high, tallying 13 points on the evening. 

  • Rice was right behind the leading scorer, Paige Breuer, who tallied 15. That included 10 second half points. 

  • Ingrid Moraes topped the squad in steals with three, a new career high for the junior. 

  • Freshman Kayla Lee notched her first collegiate point in the fourth quarter off a free throw. 

  • With the win and only two games remaining before postseason play, RC secures their seventh straight winning regular season. It will also be their sixth straight winning regular season in ODAC play.
