Roanoke Football battles R-MC but Yellow Jackets pull away late

The Game Facts:
Score: Randolph-Macon 35, Roanoke 17
Location: Salem, Va. (Salem Stadium)

The Short Story: The Roanoke College football team gave traditional Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) powerhouse Randolph-Macon College all it could handle Saturday afternoon, but the Yellow Jackets pulled away late for a 35-17 win.

Roanoke is now 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The win marks the 28th-straight conference victory for the Yellow Jackets.

How it happened:
*The Maroons had an impressive first drive of the game. Starting from their own 16, Roanoke ran 19 plays to march deep into R-MC territory, but were forced to punt after a holding call negated a would-be touchdown.
*The RC defense held Randolph-Macon scoreless in the first quarter and Ethan Cyr drilled a 30-yard field goal to put the Maroons up 3-0 early in the second quarter.
*The Yellow Jackets took a 7-3 lead and were poised for another touchdown before Tandom Smith forced a fumble at his own one-yard line - and the Maroons recovered the loose ball in the end zone for a touchback.
*Down 14-3 with one minute left in the first half, Roanoke went 75 yards on six plays in just 54 seconds. Kam Hill scrambled for nine yards but was stripped near the goal line and Carson Rhoads pounced on the loose ball for a touchdown.
*The visitors opened a 28-10 lead, but Hill hit Grey Deal on a 37-yard touchdown pass with 9:23 remaining in the fourth quarter. R-MC scored a late touchdown to cap the scoring.

By the numbers:
*Hill was 23-41 passing for 281 yards and also gained 33 yards on the ground.
*Deal caught six passes for 102 yards and Khamari Garner also snared six for 71 yards.
*Charlie Davis made a game-high nine stops, including seven solos.
*Smith had six tackles and Lane Shoemaker and Gavin Thompson each had five.
*R-MC (4-1/3-0) quarterback Dante Casciola was 11-20 for 203 yards and one touchdown and carried 15 times for 51 yards and another score. The Yellow Jackets received votes this week in the D3football.com top 25 rankings, falling just outside the top 25.

Next Time:
*Roanoke travels to Bridgewater College next Saturday for another ODAC game at 2 p.m.
