Maroons surge in second half to complete comeback victory

SALEM, Va. - The Roanoke College men's soccer team tallied four goals in the second half to hand Centre College their first loss of the season on Friday night.

Game Information
Roanoke 4, Centre 1
Records: Roanoke (3-0-2, 0-0), Centre (6-1-1, 0-0)
Location: Salem, Va. (Donald J. Kerr Stadium)

Key Moment

  • Junior Quinn Kunath scored three minutes into the second half to tie the game and swing the momentum in Roanoke's favor.

How It Happened

  • Centre scored just before the half via a header to take a 1-0 lead.

  • It didn't take long for RC to even the score though. Three minutes into the second, Ryan Pidgeon played a short corner to Kunath who was able to tuck the ball into the far-right corner from outside the box.

  • The Maroons were able to take the lead in the 53rd minute on a goal from junior Carter Laatsch. Roanoke worked the ball through the Centre defenders at the corner of the 18-yard box and Carlos Lomena eventually found a wide open Laatsch at the top of the box. Laatsch then slotted a left footed shot into the lower right corner.

  • Roanoke scored an insurance goal in the 69th minute off a penalty kick rebound. Laatsch took the penalty kick after a handball was called on Centre in the box. Laatsch's shot was initially saved but senior Girom Affolter came flying in to clean up the scraps and make it 3-1.

Notes and Notables

  • Laatsch, Affolter, and Kunath all tallied their first goals of the season in the contest.

  • Ramsey's goal was his third on the year.

  • Laatsch has now scored two goals in his career, and both have been game-winning goals. Laatsch also recorded his first career assist in the game.

  • Lomena and Ibanzi's assists were the firsts of their careers as well.

  • This is the Maroons' best start through the first five games of the season since the 2019 season in which they opened at 4-0-1 in the first five.

  • RC outshot Centre 16-9 and had a 6-2 advantage on corners.
