Poppa scores twice as Maroons fall to UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Roanoke College field hockey team fell to the University of Mary Washington Eagles in their season opener on Friday evening.

How It Happened 

  • Mary Washington struck first with a goal at 7:39 in the first quarter. 

  • Carsyn Poppa and the Maroons had the response though, scoring three minutes into the second quarter. Senior Grace Vernarelli received the ball off a penalty corner and passed it to a wide-open Poppa, who put it through the goalie's legs for the Maroons' first goal of the season. 

  • Poppa and Roanoke took advantage of another corner opportunity just seven minutes after the first goal. Danielle Crabtree sent in the corner to Poppa who stroked home her second goal from the top of the shooting circle. 

  • UMW evened the game thirty seconds after going down in the second quarter. 

  • After a scoreless third quarter, the Eagles took the lead with three minutes left in the fourth to seal the victory. 

Notes and Notables 

  • Poppa's performance on the evening was the first time in her career that she has scored multiple goals in a game. 

  • Vernarelli's assist was her first of the season and the 18th of her career. 

  • Crabtree's assist was the first of her career.
