The Short story: The Roanoke College softball team scored eight runs in the final three innings Saturday to roll to a 10-4 win over eighth-ranked Randolph Macon College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament.

The third-seeded Maroons are the sole unbeaten squad at the RMC four-team pod and will have two chances Sunday to win one game to reach the ODAC finals next weekend.

How it happened:
*Senior Kate Houle blasted a two-run home run to center field in the first inning to start the scoring, but the Yellow Jackets answered with three in the bottom of the first.
*RMC added another run in the second and the score remained 4-2 until the fifth inning.
*Erin Gorschboth doubled to score Heather McQueeney in the fifth and make it a one-run game.
*Madison Courts delivered a single to tie the game in the sixth and McQueeney followed with a two-run single to put Roanoke ahead 6-4.
*The Maroons added four insurance runs in the seventh. Courts had another RBI single, Lilly Burns hit an RBI double and Ally Brown drilled a two-run home run to left field.

Inside the numbers:
*Roanoke handed Gracie Ellis, the 2023 ODAC Pitcher of the Year, her first loss of the 2024 season and dropped her record to 18-1.
*Baylee Compton kept her team in the game out of the bullpen, tossing 4 2/3 innings and allowing six hits, no walks and one earned run with five strikeouts to earn the win. Maggie McCray closed the game out with two scoreless frames, striking out three.
*Houle was 3-4, with a double, a triple and a home run, falling just a single short of the cycle. She had three runs and two RBI.
*McQueeney, Gorschboth, Courts, Burns and Brown each had two hits and Jordyn DiFava had a hit and a walk.
*Rilee Baughan was 3-4 with two RBI for Randolph-Macon (30-4-2).
