Roanoke Softball eliminates Penn College & Moravian from NCAA Tournament

Maroons face Muskingum Saturday in Championship Series

The Facts:
Scores: Roanoke 8, Penn College 0 (5 inn.), Roanoke 3, Moravian 1
Location: Bethlehem, Pa. (Blue & Grey Field)

The Short story: Freshman Grace Clary and junior Maggie McCray combined to allow just one run as the Roanoke College softball team won a pair of elimination games Friday afternoon at Moravian University in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. The Maroons knocked out Penn College 8-0 in five innings and followed with a 3-1 win over Moravian to eliminate the host school.  

Roanoke will face Muskingum Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Championship series, needing to win two-straight contests to win the Moravian four-team pod and advance to the next round.

How it happened (vs. Penn College):
*Roanoke scored twice in the top of the first, Lilly Burns had an RBI triple and scored on a Madison Courts single.  
*The Maroons put the game away with six runs in the fourth, the final three scored on a Courts triple.

Inside the numbers (vs. Penn College):
*Clary excelled in her first collegiate start in a high-pressure situation, tossing a complete game shutout. She allowed just two hits and one walk.
*Courts was 2-3 with four RBI and Burns had two RBI.
*Heather McQueeney had a hit, a walk and two runs and two stolen bases.
*Adriana Rivera went 2-3 and also drew a walk.



How it happened (vs. Moravian):
*McQueeney led off the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second and scored on a double from Kate Houle. Moravian's Marcie Silberman tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.
*Molly Epperson brought home Burns with a single in the fourth and Burns plated Houle with a base hit in the sixth.
*McCray worked out of a jam in the seventh to finish what she started, leaving two Hounds stranded on base to end the game.
  
Inside the numbers (vs. Moravian):
*Houle, Burns and Epperson each had two hits for Roanoke (32-15). Houle had a double and triple in the contest.
*McQueeney had a hit, two walks and a stolen base.
*McCray allowed just four hits and two walks to earn her 12th win of the year.
*Moravian finishes the season 31-10.
