SALEM, Va. – The Roanoke College softball team's season will continue, as the Maroons learned Monday that the program earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament after falling just short of capturing an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Title this weekend. It is RC's third-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and 12
th overall.
The Maroons open play against Muskingum University on Thursday in a four-team double-elimination pod hosted by Moravian University in Bethlehem, Pa. Moravian will face Penn College in the other first-round matchup with the two winners meeting and the two losers squaring off in an elimination game.
Roanoke enters NCAA play with a 30-14 overall record after taking the second spot in the ODAC Tournament. Senior catcher/shortstop
Kate Houle leads the team with a .406 batting average, 10 doubles, six triples and six home runs. She has a .783 slugging percentage and has made just three errors all season while splitting time defensively at two of the most difficult positions on the diamond. Freshman centerfielder
Heather McQueeney has been the table setter for the Roanoke offense out of the leadoff spot. She has a .370 batting average, a .449 on base percentage, a team-best 31 runs and 17 stolen bases. Juniors
Maggie McCray (1.72 ERA, 11-4, 4 svs.) and
Lindsay Gedro (2.39 ERA, 12-6 record) have anchored the rotation.
Muskingum is 28-13 and also received an at large bid after getting knocked out of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament by Ohio Northern in nine innings.
Moravian (30-8) earned the Landmark Conference Tournament's automatic bid after defeating Lycoming College 5-1 in the title game Sunday. It is the Greyhounds 20
th NCAA Tournament appearance.
Penn College (30-10) punched its ticket to the NCAA Division III Softball Championships by winning two of three games against Wilson College Saturday in the United East Championship series.
