Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Maroons Defeat Capital 20-11 in NCAA 2nd Round

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 20, Capital 11
Location: Columbus, Ohio

The Short Story: Libby Bowman and Kate Loughran combined for 13 goals, while Grace Koutouzis added seven points as the Roanoke women's lacrosse team outpaced the Comets to advance to the Round of 16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bowman and Koutouzis scored early goals to put Roanoke ahead 1-0 and 2-1. Capital countered with a 3-0 run, assuming a 4-2 advantage on a marker from Andi Henry at the 7:24 mark of the first quarter.
  • Sydney Harrison and Loughran answered as the Maroons tied things up at 4-4 with 2:49 to go. But Henry's player-up goal from the 8-meter arc with 35 seconds left gave the Comets a 5-4 lead by the end of the period.
  • Roanoke used a dominant second quarter to turn the game in its favor, outscoring Capital 6-2 in the frame. The Maroons notched the first three goals of the stanza, sandwiching two more from Bowman around a free-position score from Koutouzis to take the lead for good at 7-5.
  • Grace Osborn posted the next two goals for the Comets, but Roanoke got a player-up goal from Maddie McDonald and an even-strength effort from Loughran in between that pair of markers.
  • Loughran scored from a McDonald assist at the halftime buzzer, completing a great transition sequence that saw the Maroons go the length of the field and convert in the final 20 seconds. That late goal put RC on top 10-7 at the break.
  • But the Comets proved difficult to shake. Osborn opened the second-half scoring with a player-up goal to make it 10-8. Following a Tiernan Connor tally, Henry buried another 8-meter chance to trim the margin to 11-9 with 9:30 remaining in the third quarter.
  • The Maroons recorded three of the final four markers of the period, getting goals from Bowman, Loughran and Koutouzis to take a 14-10 advantage into the final 15 minutes.
  • Bowman found the back of the net twice inside the first 43 seconds of the fourth quarter, and Roanoke proceeded to outscore Capital 6-1 in the stanza to pull away for the win.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Bowman's 7-goal output and Loughran's 6-goal haul both set career-highs for the senior attackers. Koutouzis' seven points came on three goals and four assists.
  • Connor chipped in two goals, and McDonald notched one goal and two assists. Harrison finished with one goal, one assist and four draw controls, and Zoe Blair tallied one assist.
  • Kyleigh Chickering recorded 10 saves between the pipes. Reaginn Bingaman collected a game-high six ground balls, while Addison Schmidt scooped up five.
  • Osborn and Henry, who entered the game ranked first and second in Division III in total points, combined for 15 on the afternoon. Osborn totaled six goals and one assist, and Henry notched three goals and five assists. Brenna Todd registered two goals and one assist for the Comets, while Ava Vendetti grabbed nine draw controls and Emily Serafinchon made 14 saves.
  • Roanoke outshot Capital 47-34. The Comets held a 20-13 edge on the draw circle, but RC canceled that out in part by winning the turnover battle 17-8 and compiling a 26-14 advantage in ground balls.
  • The Maroons have set a new school record with 17 victories. The 2009 squad established the previous standard with 16 wins, a mark that Roanoke tied in both 2022 and 2023.
