The Short story: The Roanoke baseball team knocked out Shenandoah University Saturday 9-5 in an elimination game at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship Series to reach the finals, but fell to the University of Lynchburg 9-4 later in the day. The Hornets earn the ODAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as conference champions.
How it happened (Shenandoah):
*Shenandoah took a 2-0 lead with sacrifice flies in the second and third innings.
*
Jonny Wall homered in the third to get the Maroons on the board.
*Roanoke followed with five runs in the fourth.
Tucker Schiavoni hit a solo home run, Wall brought in two with a double and
Hayden Giordano had a two-run single to make it a 6-2 RC edge.
*SU cut into the lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh.
*
Cayden Freels blasted a two-run homer in the seventh and Wall lofted a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Inside the numbers (Shenandoah):
*Wall finished 3-4 with four RBI and
Sam Scharville had two hits, including a triple.
*Giordano had two hits and two walks and
Nate Prince was 2-4.

Wes Hellings started and earned the win with 5 1/3 innings of two-hit ball, allowing just one earned run and one walk with four strikeouts.
Brae Farrell picked up the save.
*Pearce Bucher was 3-5 for Shenandoah (28-17). Â
How it happened (Lynchburg):
*The Hornets put three runs on the board in the first inning. RC cut the lead to two after a Giordano RBI single in the third.
*Lynchburg went ahead 5-1 but
Kyle Moshier delivered a three-run home run to center field in the seventh to make it a one-run game.
*The Hornets added two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings.
Inside the numbers (Lynchburg):
*Moshier was 2-2 with two walks and
Dylan Bonzon and Prince also had two hits.
*Quinn Madden was 3-5 with four RBI for Lynchburg (30-15).
