Maroon Baseball downs No. 18 Randolph-Macon in doubleheader

The Short story: The Roanoke College baseball team swept No. 18 Randolph-Macon College 9-7 and 14-8 Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader and wrap-up the 2024 regular season.

The Maroons have defeated the Yellow Jackets seven-straight times.

How it happened (Game 1):
*Roanoke got on the scoreboard first on a third-inning RBI double from Corey Coogan. The Yellow Jackets plated four in the bottom half of the frame however to open a 4-1 lead.
*The Maroons tied the game with three in the fourth inning, two on a Nate Prince double. RC scored three again in the fifth and Jonny Wall followed with a solo home run in the sixth to give Roanoke an 8-4 lead.
*Cayden Freels doubled in the seventh to score another run and help open a big enough lead to withstand a R-MC three-run seventh.
*Isaac Brooks earned the save with two scoreless innings of relief, leaving two runners stranded in the ninth.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Hayden Giordano had two doubles and a walk, scoring three times.
*Coogan and Freels each had two hits and a walk and Wall also had two hits.
*Matt Myers had three hits for the Yellow Jackets.

How it happened (Game 2):
*The Maroons took control early, scoring seven in the first inning. Giordano had a three-run double, Prince brought home two with a single and Coogan capped the scoring in the first with an RBI double.
*Coogan had a two-run double in the third as part of a four-run frame to go ahead 11-1. RC added two more in the fifth, the second on Coogan's third double of the game to extend the lead to 13-1.
*The Yellow Jackets chipped away at the lead with four runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to cut the lead to 13-8 but could get no closer.
*Kyle Moshier homered for an insurance run in the eighth.  

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Coogan finished 4-5 with four RBI, three runs and a walk.
*Moshier had three hits, Giordano had two and Dylan Bonzon had a hit and two walks.
*Wall drew three walks and Mason Roy finished the game on the hill with 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
*RMC falls to 25-11 and 16-6 overall.

Up Next:
*The Maroons (22-18/15-7) will enter the 2024 ODAC Tournament as the #2 seed and host a first-round series next weekend. Complete matchups, seeding and brackets will be released by the conference office later this weekend.
