The Short Story: Roanoke secured a hard-fought victory over Johnson & Wales (N.C.) on the Elizabeth Campus Courts on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Maroons took a 2-1 lead through the doubles round. Federico Maccari and Zach Kriebel knocked off Jonathan Millwood and Justin Wagner 8-3 at No. 1, while John-Henry Herrington and Marco Gustafson defeated Fernando Esteban and Hugo Cossais 8-2 at No. 3. The Wildcats scored a point at No. 2 doubles, where John Billinis and Sam Cicciarello won 8-4 against Julio Marques and Hardt Lesko.
- Kriebel stretched Roanoke's advantage to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Millwood at No. 1 singles. But Johnson & Wales pulled even when Wagner beat Marques 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 and Cossais downed Lesko 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4.
- Maccari collected a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Billinis at the No. 2 rung, but the Wildcats tied the match again with a 6-4, 6-2 win for Cicciarello over Gustafson at No. 5.
- Lance Beheler clinched the result for the Maroons at No. 6 singles, recording a 6-4, 6-3 win over Dylan Hight.
