The short story:
After having its first two games cancelled Friday, the Roanoke College softball team opened play Saturday at the D3 NFCA Leadoff Classic, falling to Wartburg 5-4 before rallying to beat Piedmont 8-0 in six innings. Freshman Baylee Compton tossed a no-hitter in the nightcap, with four walks and eight strikeouts on 86 pitches.

How it happened:
*The majority of the scoring in the first game took place in the first inning. After the Knights scored four runs, Roanoke plated two in the bottom of the frame. Heather McQueeney opened with a double and scored on an Adriana Rivera triple. Rivera later came in to score on a Madison Courts sacrifice fly.
*Wartburg made it a 5-2 with a run in the third before Roanoke rallied to cut into the lead. Courts had an RBI double in the fifth and McQueeney drove in another run in the sixth. The Maroons left the bases loaded in the sixth and couldn't bring Courts home after she hit a one out single in the seventh.
*The Maroons took control early in game two vs. Piedmont, scoring three in the second and four in the third. Leah Butts drilled a two-run home run in the second and McQueeney led off a third inning with a triple that included three singles and two walks.

Inside the numbers:
*McQueeney was 3-3 with a double and a walk in game one. Courts and Katelyn Craghead each had two hits.
*Lindsay Gedro went the distance in the circle against Wartburg, allowing four earned runs, four hits and four walks with four strikeouts.
*Rivera, Burns and Lauren Hoffman each had two hits against Piedmont. Burns, Hoffman and Butts each had two RBI.
