Maroons Fall to W&L in ODAC Men’s Hoops Quarters

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Washington and Lee 80, Roanoke 70
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story: The fourth-seeded Generals knocked off fifth-seeded Roanoke in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament at the Salem Civic Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Washington and Lee assumed a 17-11 lead on a 3-pointer from Robert DiSibio with 14:13 remaining in the first half. But the Maroons countered with a 10-2 spurt, going in front 21-19 when Joshua McClary connected on a triple at the 11:58 mark.
  • W&L grabbed the lead for good on a bucket from Drew Harrell that made it 27-26 with 8:30 remaining. The Generals stretched the margin to nine (48-39) on another DiSibio trey with 1:05 to play, but Roanoke pulled within six on a hoop from Joshua Morse with 28 seconds left, and the teams headed into halftime with W&L ahead 48-42.
  • The Generals led by 10 on multiple occasions early in the second half, only to see the Maroons fight back to pull within three (58-55) with 11:06 on the clock. Jack d'Entremont hit a triple that pushed the W&L lead to 61-55, but McClary answered with another long-distance shot to make it 61-58 with 9:18 to go.
  • W&L extended its advantage back to double digits (72-62) on a three-point play from Harrell with 5:12 remaining. Roanoke, which connected on just two field goals in the final seven minutes of the game, would not come any closer than seven points the rest of the way.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • McClary poured in a career-high 27 points, knocking down 10-of-17 shots from the floor and 5-of-10 three-point attempts, and he also dished out four assists.
  • Justin Kuthan totaled 15 points and nine rebounds. Morse finished with 12 points, while Marcus Morgan posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
  • DiSibio and Harrell scored 27 points apiece to match McClary for the game-high. DiSibio also grabbed 10 rebounds, and Harrell snared nine boards. Colin Ryan chipped in 11 points for W&L, and d'Entremont secured 14 rebounds.
  • The offenses were on fire in the first half, as the Generals shot 59.4 percent (19-of-32) from the floor and the Maroons knocked down 16-of-32 field goals and 6-of-11 shots from beyond the arc. But both teams cooled off in the second stanza, with W&L going just 9-of-31 from the floor and Roanoke shooting 9-of-29. However, the Generals connected on 17-of-19 foul shots for the game, including a 12-of-14 clip after the break.
  • The loss snaps a string of six consecutive ODAC semifinal appearances for the Maroons. Roanoke had defeated W&L in back-to-back quarterfinal games, including a 117-103 win in quadruple overtime last year.
