Maroons Fall to No. 11 W&L in Women’s Hoops

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Washington and Lee 76, Roanoke 62
Location: Salem, Va.

The Short Story: The 11th-ranked Generals pulled away in the fourth period to claim a 14-point victory over Roanoke in the regular-season finale at the Cregger Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The pendulum swung back and forth in the first quarter, which featured three ties and five lead changes. After Madison Nereu put Roanoke ahead 16-14 on a pair of free throws with 1:44 to go, Hanna Malik nailed a 3-pointer to give W&L a 17-16 edge, and the Generals would lead 19-16 by the end of the frame.
  • Elka Prechel hit three consecutive triples to open the second period, extending W&L's lead to 28-16 with 8:43 to play. But the Maroons worked their way back in the game, using an 8-0 run that featured four points from Lauren Keel to tie things up at 34-34 with 1:17 to play. The Generals would go back in front by a narrow 40-36 tally at the half.
  • Roanoke kept the margin within single digits throughout the third quarter. A Nereu bucket trimmed the gap to 53-49 at the 2:11 mark, but hoops from Mary Schleusner and Zou Raine put W&L up 57-49 by the end of the period.
  • A three-point play from Rose Sande made it 60-54 with 8:40 left in the game. But the Generals then reeled off 11 unanswered points, building up an unassailable 71-54 lead midway through the final quarter.
  • Prior to the game, Keel and Sande were honored during the Maroons' Senior Day ceremony.
