The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team kicked off the 2024 season by hosting Maryville College in a double header at Salem Memorial Ballpark. The Maroons took a 2-0 lead, but the Scots responded with 10 straight runs to put the game out of reach. Maryville broke a 3-3 tie late in game two and withstood a Roanoke ninth inning rally to hang on for a 5-4 win.
Highlights:
- The Maroons would break open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth. Parker Stallard drew a one-out free pass and promptly stole second base. Jonny Wall reached on a walk and both runners advanced via the stolen base on a strikeout. Sam Scharville grounded to the first baseman, but the pitcher couldn't handle the toss and RC plated a pair of runs.
- In the top of the fifth, the Scots got two runners on but starting pitcher Jackson Murphy used a pair of strike outs to get out of the inning.
- Maryville would take their first lead in the top of the 6th with three runs and add seven more runs in the seventh to seize control.
- Roanoke would load the bases late but in the end the Maroons fell in their season opener, 13-5.
- Wall was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Dylan Bonzon finished 1-2 with an RBI.

Highlights:
- Roanoke struck first on an RBI double by Jack Fehlner that would plate Spencer Rhoads.
- Bonzon doubled off the left field wall to score Tucker Schiavoni and the game would be tied at 2-2 after three innings of play.
- After the Scots took the lead, Stallard singled to right field to tie the game by sending Nate Chown across home plate.
- In the bottom of the fifth, the Maroons loaded the bases but could not break the tie.
- Thomas Burgess faced a runner on third situation but recorded his seventh strikeout of the afternoon and the game would stay knotted at 3-3.
- Maryville would score a pair of runs to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Wall laced a one-out single through the left side and advanced to second on a Bonzon ground out. Wall moved up 90-feet on a wild pitch and would score via a Rhoads double to right center. Cayden Freels reached on an error putting Maroons on first and third. However, RC was unable to complete the comeback falling to the Scots 5-4.
- Stallard, Wall, Schiavoni, and Rhoads all had two hits apiece.
