The Short Story:Â The Roanoke men's soccer team saw their opening game of the 2023 VBR Sports/Roanoke Invitational slip by as Oglethorpe used two first half goals to leave Kerr Stadium with a 2-1 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Stormy Petrels got on the scoreboard early in the 5th minute with a goal to take a 1-0 leave over the Maroons.
- Oglethorpe added their second of the first half in the 32nd minute off a cross that was sent directly in the front for a goal and a 2-0 lead.
- With just over six minutes left, the Maroons were fouled for a free kick just outside the box. Dylan Berk fired a shot that the Oglethorpe goal saved, but could not hold onto it. Lucas Pace, who just entered the game as a substitute, followed through with a right footed goal that brought Roanoke back within one.
- The Stormy Petrels however played keep away as much as possible the rest of the contest to hold of for the 2-1 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Maroons' goal by Pace was the sophomore's first career.
- Oglethorpe escaped with the win despite Roanoke leading in shots (12-10) and saves (3-0).
- Denzel Marufu played all 90 minutes in goal, making all three of the Maroons' saves

- Roanoke is back on the pitch tomorrow night against Covenant in Kerr Stadium. The Scots fell to Lynchburg 3-0 to open the Roanoke Invitational.
