The Short Story: The Roanoke women's tennis team fell 8-1 to Southern Virginia in the 2023-24 season opener on Thursday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern Virginia grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Paula Snelson and Jillian Arnold defeated Julia Bassett and Bella Gustafson 8-1 at the top spot, while Lia Savage and Grace Howell knocked off Victoria Rios and Sidney Wright 8-4 at #3.
- Roanoke secured a point at #2 doubles, where Halle Fernstrum and Lia Streibich dispatched Lydia Delich and Remly Fry by an 8-5 count.
- The Knights swept all six singles points, getting straight-set wins in five of those matches. The exception was at #4 singles, where Fry held off Bassett 7-5, 6-7 (5), 10-7.
- Elsewhere, Snelson beat Streibich 6-0, 6-1 at #1, Delich topped Fernstrum 6-4, 6-2 at #2, Arnold downed Gustafson 6-1, 6-1 at #3, Savage bested Rios 6-0, 6-2 at #5, and Howell defeated Morgan Tobey 6-1, 6-1 at #6.
