Nereu's Big Fourth Quarter Leads Maroons Over Royals

THE GAME FACTS
Score:
 Roanoke 63, Eastern Mennonite 57
Location: Harrisonburg, Va.

The Short Story:  The Roanoke women's basketball team got a big fourth quarter from Madison Nereu which allowed the Maroons to come away with a 63-57 win over the EMU Royals on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • An early 8-0 run by the Maroons in the first quarter, capped by a jumper from Kate Littlejohn, gave Roanoke the 10-2 lead with 6:06 showing on the clock. The Maroons would extended their lead up to 11 on a three pointer from Peyton Kirchner with 1:45 left and settled in for the 21-13 lead going into the second period.
  • The majority of the second quarter saw the teams battle back and forth with the Royals cutting the lead down to three with 3:57 left before Roanoke built it back up to seven with 2:05 remaining in the first half. A late three by EMU cut the Maroons lead down four at the intermission, 33-29.
  • It took nearly two minutes into the third before either teams scored with Rose Sande making a jumper with 8:05 on the clock; and over another two minutes before any other points were added to the scoreboard on an EMU free throw at 5:46. The baskets then started to light up with the teams playing even as the Maroons led 43-39 going into the fourth.
  • EMU would tie the game up at 43-43 for the first tie since the score was 2-2, with 8:40 left in the game. Another tied score at 45-45 would be the last closest the Royals would get to the lead. Nereu come alive in the period scoring 11 of her 23 points in the period and five of her 17 rebounds to put Roanoke ahead for good and help the Maroons secure the 63-27 win.
