The Short Story: The Maroons used a dominant performance in the second period, outscoring York 32-8 in the frame on their way to an 81-58 victory over the Spartans on day one of the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic at the Cregger Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- York closed the first quarter with a 7-2 stretch to go in front 17-10 after 10 minutes.
- Roanoke tallied the first seven points of the second period, knotting the score at 17-17 on a bucket from Jada Steele at the 8:14 mark. After the Spartans briefly retook the lead, the Maroons reeled off 11 unanswered points to go in front for good at 28-19.
- Another 11-0 spurt later in the quarter would extend the margin further, and Roanoke took a 42-25 advantage into halftime. Jacquelyn DeJesse scored eight of her game-high 19 points in the second period, while Rose Sande had seven markers in the stanza and Steele and Kate Littlejohn chipped in six points apiece.
- York whittled the lead down to 45-33 on a Makenna Zimmerman layup with 6:49 remaining in the third quarter. But the Maroons countered with a 13-5 stretch, quickly putting the game out of reach.
BY THE NUMBERS
- DeJesse's 19 points tied her career-high, which she set earlier this season against Guilford. Littlejohn also set a new career standard with 17 points, knocking down 4-of-5 attempts from three-point range.
- Sande finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals, and Steele also notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.
- Roanoke finished 10-of-20 from beyond the arc while limiting York to a 6-of-27 clip from distance. The Maroons also held a 49-35 advantage on the glass.
- Alyssa Hocker paced the Spartans with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Taylor Burda recorded 13 points.
