The Short story: The Roanoke College men's basketball team opened the 2023 Cregger Invitational with an 87-73 win over Worcester State University, the defending MASCAC champions.
How it happened:
*Roanoke started the game with a 6-0 run behind two baskets and two free throws from senior forward Justin Kuthan. The Maroons extended the lead to 14-2 before the Lancers offense got untracked and cut the advantage to just 41-40 at halftime.
*It was a five-point game (78-73) with 1:18 left on the game clock, but Roanoke iced the game from the free-throw line, hitting 7-8 down the stretch.
Inside the numbers:
*Kuthan had game-highs of 26 points and 13 rebounds.
*Joshua Morse also earned a double double with 19 points and 12 boards.
*Zach Rosenthal had 18 points and Joshua McClary filled the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists.
*Brandon Goris scored a team-best 17 for the visitors in just 15 minutes off the bench.
