The Short Story: Lauren Keel had a career-high 26 points as the Roanoke women's basketball team dropped its season-opener on the road to Guilford in ODAC action Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first three minutes of the game saw the score kept within one after Parker Childress made a layup as the Quakers led 6-5. Guilford went on a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to expand their lead to 15 at 20-5 with 2:14 left in the first quarter. Roanoke would score nine of the next 11 points to get within eight at 22-14 heading into the second quarter.
- Cold shooting for the Maroons saw Guilford push their lead back up to 17 by the end of the first half as the Quakers outscored Roanoke 16-7 in the period.
- The third quarter was much more even between the two teams. The Quakers pulled ahead by 26 with 4:12 remaining in the quarter before the Maroons cut the lead down to GC lead down to 16 with 12 seconds left on a Keel layup.
- A 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter by GC put their lead up to 27 with 8:48 remaining in the game. The Maroons offense then came alive with a 17-2 push over the next four and half minutes to cut the lead down to 12 at 68-56 on a pair of free throws by Keel. The Maroons would cut the lead down to as little as five with 2:01 remaining. Both teams would try to make an offensive push to the final buzzer with the Quakers getting the slight edge finishing the game 83-75 over the Maroons.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Roanoke was led by Keel's 26 points and was closely followed by a career-high 19 points by Jacquelyn DeJesse.
- Keel finished with a double-double as the senior had 11 rebounds (five offensive, six defensive).
- The Maroons led Guilford in second-chance points (24-21), bench points (41-24), and rebounds (46-34).

- Roanoke will turn its attention to the Cregger Center this weekend as it hosts the 2023 Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 18 and 19.
