The Short Story: Five Maroons reached double-digit points, but it was not enough as the Roanoke men's basketball team fell in the championship game of the Widener Tip-Off Tournament to the host Pride on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Maroons looked to take charge early with a 7-0 to start the game, capped by a jumper from Joshua McClary at 16:18. Roanoke would extend it up to as much as 10 on another McClary jumper with 11:42 left in the opening half, 19-9.
- A three-pointer by Zach Rosenthal at 9:09 would put the Maroons ahead by their biggest margin at 13, 26-13. With Roanoke leading by 10 at 2:31, Widener answered with a flurry of steals and baskets to go on a 12-2 run over the two and half minutes to left the score at 37-37 going into halftime.
- The teams kept it close to start the second half with the Maroons holding on to a one-point lead off a free throw by McClary at 16:30, 47-46. The Pride would go on an 8-0 run over the next 57 seconds to take their first lead of the game, 54-47 at 15:33. Cold shooting by Roanoke during a nearly five minute stretch allowed Widener to go on a 17-1 run.
- The Pride nearly maintained their lead for the remaining 10 minutes of the game at double-digits except when Joshua Morse made a free throw with 4:25 left before claiming the tournament title with the 85-74 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Roanoke led Widener in free throws made (19-5) and rebounds (35-22).
- Marcus Morgan had the game-high 16 points to lead the Maroons. Rosenthal (13), Morse (12), Justin Kuthan (11), and McClary (11) also reached double figures.
UP NEXT
- Roanoke will turn its attention to the Cregger Center next weekend as it hosts the 2023 Frankie Allen Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 17 and 18.
- The Maroons start off with the Brooklyn Bulldogs on Friday at 6 p.m. with Berry (GA) and Southern Virginia in the other game at 8 p.m.
- The consolation game is on Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. with the championship game to follow at 3 p.m.
