Captains Score Twice in Second Half to Escape With Win Over Maroons

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Christopher Newport 2, Roanoke 1

The Short Story:  Christopher Newport used a pair of second half goals to escape the midweek contest with a 2-1 win over the Roanoke men's soccer team in Newport News.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Maroons got on the board first at 13:00 when Girom Affolter took a pass from Kyle Butcher and fired a goal from the middle to the right side of the goal to give the Maroons the 1-0 lead, one they would keep going into halftime.
  • A Captains goal in the 64th minute would level the game at 1-1 before CNU scored the game-winner with just over 10 minutes left in the game off a header. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Maroons scored their goal on one of their two shots in the game.
  • Al Cavagnaro played all 90 minutes in goal, making seven saves. 

UP NEXT

  • Roanoke returns to the Tidewater area on Sat. Oct. 7 when it gets back into ODAC play with a game at Virginia Wesleyan. Game time with the Marlins is scheduled for 1 p.m.
