The Basics
Score: Roanoke 14 | Catholic 12
Records: Maroons 1-1 / 0-0 ODAC | Cardinals 2-1
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke would play in front of the home fans for the first time in 2022 when they hosted Catholic on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals came in on a two-game win streak while the Maroons were looking to get their first win in their first home game. Roanoke raced out to a 3-1 lead but the Cardinals roared back and took an 8-5 lead at the half. After Roanoke tied the game, the Cards scored to take a one-goal lead into the fourth period. The Maroons used a 4-0 run in taking the final quarter, 6-3, to complete the comeback and hand Catholic their first loss of the season.

How it Happened:

  • After Catholic scored to start the afternoon, Luke Kammerman, George Gilbert, and Luca Docking went back-to-back-to-back as Roanoke enjoyed a 3-1 advantage. However, the Cardinals answered with three goals in a row to take a 4-3 lead after the opening period of play.
  • Ethan Caldwell tied the score but the remainder of the first half would belong to the visitors as Catholic took an 8-5 lead into the break.
  • Wyatt Whitlow scored off a feed from Sean Kennedy before Kennedy scored a pair of goals to tie the game at 8-8. With 3:34 to play in the period, the Cardinals scored and would take a one-goal advantage into the final 15-minutes.
  • Gilbert started and Kammerman finished a 4-0 RC run as the Maroons were up, 12-9, with less than 10-minutes to go. After the lead was cut to two, Jay Frye scored and Gilbert completed his hat-trick and Roanoke was up four, 14-10, with 6:41 left on the clock. Catholic scored twice more but it wasn't enough as Roanoke picked up their first win of the 2022 campaign, 14-12.
  • Gilbert had three goals on seven shots with Docking, Whitlow, and Kennedy adding two scores apiece. John Dias caused five turnovers and picked up four ground balls while Matt Jahries was able to pick up eight loose balls. Taylor Lewis evened his record at 1-1 with 12 saves in goal.

Up Next: Roanoke travles to Maryland and the USA Lacrosse Hall of Fame to take on Dickinson on Sunday February 27th.
