Maroons Win Season Opener

Box Score

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 65 | Shenandoah 52
Records: Maroons 1-0 | Hornets 0-1
Location: Winchester, Va.

The Lead: The Maroons would see Shenandoah score the first four points of the game before they answered with a 7-0 run to seize control. After building their advantage to double digits going into the half, Roanoke would maintain their lead and pull away late for the 13 point win.

How it Happened:

  • After falling behind by four, a Rose Sande three-pointer and a pair of Kristina Harrel free throws would give the Maroons a lead.
  • A 5-0 run would see the Hornets back in front before JaBryah Haverkamp put Roanoke in front for good with four minutes to play in the first quarter. A Morgan Micallef jumper would push the advantage to three at the end of the first frame.
  • Renee Alquiza scored eight of the Maroons 24 points in the second quarter and aided by eight Shenandoah turnovers, the Maroons built a 12 point lead at the half, 37-25.
  • An Alquiza jump shot out of the break pushed the lead to 14, the largest of the game.
  • Over the next nine minutes the Hornets would close the gap and after Sarah Sondrol scored on a layup, the Roanoke lead had been cut to six, 46-40.
  • However, Alquiza would answer with a triple just seconds later to make it a nine point game heading into the fourth period.
  • The game would remain close, 53-48, at the midway point of the quarter. Back-to-back buckets by Alquiza and Kayla Kinsler would allow Roanoke to regain control and pull away down the stretch for the 13 point victory.
  • Alquiza finished with a game high 20 points while Kinsler came off the bench to add 11 points and six rebounds. Harrel had nine points and 10 rebounds with Sande scoring nine to go with seven boards.
  • The Hornets got 16 points from Sierra St, Cyr and 12 from Olivia Weinel.

Up next: The Maroons will go back on the road this Sunday, January 24, when they make a trip to Emory & Henry for the final non-conference game before the start of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) schedule.
