The Lead: Roanoke got off to a quick start against the Hornets and built a double-digit lead that they held for most of the night as the Maroons picked up their ninth ODAC win of the season.

How it Happened:

  • Morgan Micallef got RC off to a quick start, scoring the first four points of the night.
  • After Lynchburg got on the board, the Maroons responded by going on a 7-1 run, capped by a pair of Micallef free throws.
  • After the Hornets closed the gap to two, Renee Alquiza converted a three-point play to give RC a 15-10 lead after period number one.
  • Back to back three-point plays by Ayanna Scarborough and Alquiza pushed the Roanoke lead to double-digits less than two minutes into the second quarter.
  • Lynchburg would rally and after an Erin Green three-point play, the Hornets had closed the gap to four.
  • With 5:16 remaining before the break, Roanoke would start to re-build their lead. Kristina Harrel would net a layup and D'Anna Cvetnich added a pair of free throws as the Maroons would enjoy their largest lead of the first half, 37-25.
  • RC came out of halftime with a 10 point advantage and the two long-time ODAC rivals would play even for the first half of the third frame.
  • A steal and layup by Lexi Hall would cut the Maroon's lead to six. However, Roanoke would see Scarborough score six of their next eight points to once again enjoy a 12 point edge.
  • Sayre Brandstatter closed out the third with a pair of free throws to push the RC lead to 14.
  • The early stages of the final stanza would belong to the home team. Harrel completed a 13-5 Roanoke run to push the advantage to 19 with less than four minutes to play.
  • The Hornets would cut the deficit to 11 but could get no closer as Roanoke closed out the game with a 15 point win.
  • Scarborough and Alquiza would each score a game high 17 while Brandstatter added 15 with Harrel (11) and Whitney Hopson (10) making it five Maroons in double-digits.
  • Cvetnich led with seven rebounds and Hopson handed out five assists.

Up next: Roanoke will play host to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 2:00pm. The game will be the annual Play 4 Kay game to help promote breast cancer awareness.
