The Lead: Samm Chandler scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Averett to a 76-72 win over Roanoke on Sunday afternoon in Salem.

How it Happened:

• Cary Beahm led RC with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Bridget Holleran tallied 18 points for the Maroons, while Jamella Foster had 13 in the loss.
• The first period was close with neither team able to get more than a four point lead with Beahm giving RC a 19-15 edge with 34 seconds to go.
• The second period proved to be nip and tuck as well and Holleran gave RC its largest lead of the contest with a bucket to make 33-28 with under a minute to in the half.
• With RC leading 43-41 in the third period, the Cougars closed the frame with a 10-4 run giving AU a 51-47 advantage.
• The game was tied at 66-66 with just over two minutes to go in the contest before the teams exchanged three-pointers. After a Beahm free-throw put RC up 70-69, Chandler converted a three-point play on the other end of the court to give AU the lead for good.
• RC shot 42.3% from the field, making 30-of-71 shots on the afternoon, while AU made 28-of-78 attempts from the field. Both teams struggled at the free-throw line with Averett missing 10 attempts and RC missing nine.
