LYNCHBURG – The Roanoke College men's soccer team topped Randolph College, 3-1 on Friday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. The Maroons now have a record of 5-1-1, 2-0 in the ODAC, while the WildCats are 4-1-1, 1-1 in ODAC play.
Through the Maroons short history with Randolph College in men's soccer, Roanoke leads the all-time series between the two teams, 4-3-1, having won two of the last three contests.
Roanoke scored two goals quickly in the first half to take a 2-0 lead over the WildCats. Roanoke's first goal came from a
Marc Dinkel penalty kick. He buried the shot low into the right side of the netting for the 1-0 Roanoke advantage at 12:07 in the first. Just two minutes later,
Tyler Carbaugh netted an unassisted goal to put the Maroons up by two. Carbaugh fired a rocket of a volley off of a ball that popped into the air from about 25 yards out. Roanoke would hold on to the 2-0 lead through the end of the first 45 minutes.
The Maroons scored once more at the 65
th minute. Carbaugh chipped a ball over the defense as Mahabir headed the ball into the back of the goal for the 3-0 Roanoke lead. Six minutes later, Randolph scored its only goal of the night as Blake Heatherly scored off of a penalty kick. Roanoke maintained its then two goal lead through the buzzer to pick up the 3-1 victory.
Roanoke trailed Randolph in shots 18-14 in the game.
Marc Dinkel led the team with three shots, followed by
Tyler Carbaugh and
Orestis Ilias with two apiece.
Cole Sinclair played the entire 90 minutes in goal, tallying seven saves.
Blake Heatherly led the WildCats in shots taken, finishing with six on the night. He was followed by Sam Griffith and Troy Jurney with three shots apiece. Randolph's goalkeeper, CJ Stephens, also played the complete game, finishing with four saves.
The Maroons return to action on Salisbury University on September 24
th. That contest is scheduled for a 4:00 PM start.
