SALEM – The Roanoke College women's soccer team fell to Washington and Lee 1-0 in the team's Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday. The Maroons now have a record of 4-3, 0-1 in ODAC play, while the Generals are 4-0-1, 2-0 in the ODAC.
Roanoke and Washington and Lee have played very tight matches over the past six years, with every meeting having the teams separated by just one goal. The two teams are now tied all-time against one another with an overall record of 18-18-4
Washington and Lee took advantage early in the contest. The Generals' first goal was scored at just 2:39 as Tricia Jessee scored off of a corner kick. Chandler Wickers flew one into the box from the corner, where Jessee converted with the header for the 1-0 W&L advantage.
The Generals continued to attack on the Maroons, outshooting Roanoke 14-2 during the game. Another close goal for W&L came at 66:50 when Katie Rossi took a shot at the right side of the goal. However, Roanoke defender
Laura Sullivan came diving in from the left side to keep the Maroons within one with 24 minutes to play. However, despite the Maroons attacking in the final minutes of the game, the Generals held the lead through the remainder of the contest for the 1-0 win.
Roanoke fired off two shots during the game, with
SierraLynn Johnson taking one and
Marlana Barnard taking the other. Johnson's shot was the lone shot on goal for the Maroons.
Carolyn Sarbacher played all 90 minutes in net and tallied five saves.
Tricia Jessee led the Generals in shots with six, followed by Caroline Hahn, Katie Rossi and Chandler Wickers with two each. Addie Healy also played the complete game in goal, making one save.
The Generals outshot the Maroons 14-2, as well as leading in corner kicks 8-0.
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, September 20
th as they play host to Bridgewater College at Kerr Stadium. That contest is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
