MOUNT BERRY, GA – The Roanoke College men's soccer team fell to Berry College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Maroons take their first loss and have a record of 4-1-1, while the Vikings now have a mark of 4-1.
Roanoke entered the contest ranked fifth in the NSCAA Continental Tire NCAA Division III Men's South Atlantic Poll. Of the two Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams in the South Atlantic Poll, Roanoke has the highest ranking of the two (W&L – 7
th).
The Vikings jumped out to an early lead on their home turf, as Alex Rotoloni scored in the eighth minute to give Berry a 1-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, Berry's Zak Wallingford found the back of the net off of a pass from Christian Fulbright. Wallingford finished into the lower right corner of the goal off of a cross.
Roanoke cut into the deficit in the 31
st minute, when
Cole Thornton answered with a goal. Thornton slipped his shot past the keeper on the right side, with the help of a cross by an assisting
Tyler Carbaugh. Thornton's goal would, however, prove to be the final goal of the contest, as Roanoke took the 2-1 loss to Berry.
The Maroons were led in shots by
Marc Dinkel, who took six of the team's 18 shots. He was followed by
Tyler Carbaugh who fired off three shots.
Cole Sinclair played all 90 minutes in net and tallied four saves.
Berry matched Roanoke in shots on the day, with each team taking 18. Evan Echols led the Vikings with four shots, while Alex Rotoloni and Zak Wallingford each notched three attempts. Jon Nelson picked up the win in goal for Berry, tallying six saves. The Vikings held the Maroons without a single corner kick on the evening, as well.
The Maroons return to action on Friday September 19
th, as they will travel to Randolph College to re-enter ODAC Competition. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
