SALEM – The Roanoke College women's soccer team staved off a late game charge by Meredith College to win 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons now have a record of 4-1, while the Avenging Angels are 2-3 on the season.
The Maroons get back to .500 all time against Meredith, as the win gives the teams an all-time record of 3-3-1.
Roanoke jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the contest.
Courtney Yoke drove down the right side of the field and crossed it to
Ashley Barnes, who potted the goal at the 2:23 mark of the first half. Barnes' goal ties her with
Marlana Barnard for a team-high three goals on the season. The Maroons led in shots in the first half, firing off five to Meredith's three.
The second went the same as the first for the Maroons, this time with a goal being scored in the first 40 seconds of the half.
Linnea Kremer lofted a ball from the left side that sailed over the keeper's head and into the net for the 2-0 lead moments into the period. Roanoke's defense had a strong showing during the second half, but gave up a goal at 78:44 as Meredith's Madison Mathis slipped one past the keeper to pull within one, 2-1. The Maroons had a scary moment in the final second of the game, as Meredith sailed a last second corner kick into the box. Sarah Varnell got a head on the ball and sent it straight into the post, which was then cleared by the Roanoke defense, saving the Maroons' 2-1 win.
Roanoke was led in shots by
Ashley Barnes, who took three attempts during the contest.
Abbe Guarino and
Taylor Sayegh each tallied two shots during the contest as well.
Carolyn Sarbacher and
Sarah Dvorak split a half each in goal, with Sarbacher making three saves.
The Avenging Angels were led in shots by Meredith McCarty and Madison Mathis, who each took two apiece. Jaisa Loch played all 90 minutes in goal tallying nine saves.
Roanoke outshot Meredith 15-8 during the contest, while the Avenging Angels held the corner kick advantage 6-2.
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, September 13
th as they travel to take on Christopher Newport on the road. That contest is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start.
