SALEM – The Roanoke College men's soccer team won its Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener, 4-1 against Shenandoah University. The Maroons remain unbeaten at 4-0-1, 1-0 in the ODAC, while the Hornets are now 2-3, 0-1 in the ODAC.
Roanoke now has a 14-3 all-time record against Shenandoah University, dating back to 1983. The Maroons have won five straight games against the Hornets, with an 18-3 goal differential over those five meetings.
The Maroons scored early and often in the first half, gaining an early decisive lead over the Hornets. Roanoke's first goal came from
Brandon Bauer at 11:02, his first of his career. Just two minutes later,
Orestis Ilias netted the second goal of the game, his first of the season. Ilias' goal was assisted by
Marc Dinkel. Dinkel assisted the Maroons next goal as well at 21:10, when
Garrett Eldridge fired one past the keeper for the three-goal advantage. The Maroons maintained their lead to the end of the first half, entering the break ahead 3-0.
Shenandoah put up their first goal on the board at the 55:36 mark, as Eduardo Santiago sailed a corner kick across the box to the feet of Brian Maye, who found the back of the net. Roanoke answered Shenandoah's goal at 75:42 as
Robby Lentine sailed a ball into the back of the net, unassisted to give the Maroons a 4-1 lead. That would prove to be the Maroons final goal as Roanoke won its ODAC opener 4-1 against Shenandoah University.
Robby Lentine led the Maroons in shots with three, followed by
Tyler Carbaugh,
Sam Rauf,
Brandon Bauer and
Cole Thornton with two each. Lentine also led the team with two shots on goal.
Cole Sinclair played all 90 minutes in net and tallied three saves.
Brian Maye had two shots for the Hornets, leading the team in the category. Four other players for Shenandoah finished with one shot apiece. Francisco Nolasco played 66 minutes in net and finished with three saves.
Roanoke led in total shots 18-6, while Shenandoah led the game with 11 corner kicks to the Maroons' 6.
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, September 13
th as they travel to Mount Berry, GA to take on Berry College. That contest is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start.
