Men's Soccer Rolls in 5-1 Victory Over Averett on Saturday

Box Score SALEM – The Roanoke College men's soccer team cruised to a 5-1 victory against Averett University in the final game of the 2014 Roanoke Invitational.  The Maroons now sit with a record of 1-0-1, while the Cougars are now 0-2 after the weekend.

Goals happened early and often in the first half of the contest.  Tyler Carbaugh got things started off for the Maroons just 1:33 into the contest as he netted one into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 Roanoke lead.  Just two minutes later, a Averett defender attempted to clear a ball away from the goal, however it found the upper 90 for Roanoke's second goal of the game.

Averett started to swing the game back in its direction at 8:47 in the game as Nathan Brown scored for the Cougars, accepting an assist from Simon Holmstrom.  Not even 10 minutes into the game, three goals had been scored and Roanoke held a 2-1 lead.  Three minutes after the previous goal, Marc Dinkel fired a laser of a shot past the keeper to put the Maroons ahead by two, 3-1.  The game's longest span up to this point without a goal covered 10 minutes, until freshman Sam Rauf scored his first career goal off of a pass from Carbaugh.  Less than two minutes later, Garrett Eldridge scored the game's, and Roanoke's final goal, potting the fifth goal off of an assist from Dinkel.  Neither team was able to find the net again for the remaining 66 minutes, as Roanoke is victorious 5-1 over Averett.

Dinkel led the Maroons in shots for the night with four, while Robby Lentine, Cole Thornton and Tim Mahabir each finished with three each.  Carbaugh and Dinkel each notched one assist on the night, both of which were their first assists of the season.  Cole Sinclair picked up the win in the net for the Maroons, tallying one save in 45 minutes of play.  Nick Tadros played the second half for the Maroons and also picked up one save.

The Cougars finished the contest with eight shots, six of which were taken by Nathan Brown.  Two of his shots were on goal and one found the back of the net for Averett's only goal.  John Matrisciano played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cougars, finishing with five saves.

The Maroons led in shots 21-8, while also hold a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Roanoke returns to action on Saturday, September 6th as the Maroons play Greensboro College in the first day of the Lynchburg Invitational.  The Maroons will then face Oglethorpe University on Sunday, September 7th.  Both games have a 1:30 PM start.
