Men's Basketball Edged in ODAC Opener, 71-67 to Hampden-Sydney

Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY – The Roanoke College men's basketball team was narrowly edged by Hampden-Sydney in the Maroons ODAC opener on Wednesday evening, 71-67.  The Maroons now have a record of 3-2, 0-1 in the ODAC , while the Tigers are 4-0, 1-0 in ODAC play.

Three Maroons finished in double figures on Wednesday night, with Andrew Daniels leading the charge with 17 points.  Daniels hit six shots from the field, including a 4-8 mark from behind the arc.  He also tallied four rebounds in the contest.  Julian Ramirez finished the game with 15 points, a season high for the Palmyra, VA native, going 6-10 from the field.  He led the team with four assists and tied for a team-high five rebounds.  He also led the squad in steals with two.  Carter Wright rounded out the double-digit scoring for Roanoke with 10 points and a team-high tying five rebounds.

Roanoke and Hampden-Sydney traded the lead back and forth a number of times in the first half, with Roanoke's last lead of the half coming at 9:35 off of a pair of John Fitchett free throws.  The Maroons entered halftime trailing the Tigers by six, 37-31.

The Maroons came out of the locker room hot in the second half, going on a 14-2 run in the first five minutes of the half to take a 45-39 advantage.  Carter Wright and Andrew Daniels led the charge for the Maroons during the run, scoring five points apiece.  The Tigers stopped the run with a Greg Lewis trey, but Daniels answered with a three-pointer of his own on the very next possession.  However, that sparked a 12-0 run from the Tigers, capped by a three-pointer from Jake Duncan.  With 10:41 to play, Roanoke now trailed 54-48.  The Maroons were able to cut the deficit down to two points after Cameron smith hit a layup with 1:25 to play.  However, clock management by the Tigers and five Mike Murray free throws sealed the game for Hampden-Sydney as the Maroons fell 71-67 on Wednesday.

Jake Duncan scored a team-high 14 points for the Tigers on Wednesday, shooting 3-4 from behind the arc, and 5-9 from the field.  He tallied four rebounds, two steals and one assist.  Mike Murray followed with 13 points, with a 5-6 mark from the free throw line.  Greg Lewis and Guilherme Guimaraes finished with 12 points apiece.  Leon Hargrove led the Tigers in both rebounds (7) and assists (7).

Hampden-Sydney outshot the Maroons 53.3 to 38.1 percent from the field, including a 57.9 to 30.8 percent margin from behind the arc.  Roanoke led the game in rebounds, pulling down 36 to the Tigers' 29.  The Maroons also held the advantage in second-chance points, 12-4.

The Roanoke College men's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, December 6th as they take on Eastern Mennonite University in the Bast Center.  That game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
