Daniel Eacho Scores 1,000th Career Point, Maroons Win Dick Leftwich V-Foundation Classic

Box Score SALEM – With a layup in the second half, Daniel Eacho became the 34th Maroon in Roanoke College men's basketball history to record 1,000 points for his career.  Eacho's milestone came in the Maroons' 89-82 victory in the championship game of the 2014 Dick Leftwich V-Foundation Classic.  Roanoke finishes the tournament with a record of 3-1, while the Monarchs are 2-2 for the year.

Roanoke Vs. Methodist Highlights

Eacho, a senior from North Chesterfield, VA, picked up his 1,000th point on the front end of an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:27 remaining in the contest.  Eacho, with a career high 34 points today, is now the 34th Maroon in school history to cross the century threshold, tallying 1,004 career points by the end of the contest.  In the first four games of the season, Eacho has scored 75 points, ranking third in the ODAC in points per game with 18.8 per contest, while leading the league in total points.  He is the first Maroon to hit 1,000 points since Kwasi Amponsah completed the feat on December 15th, 2012.  Eacho ended the 2013-14 season named First Team All-ODAC, the first Maroon to do so since now assistant coach, Curtis Perry, in 2009.

Three other Maroons finished in double-figures in Saturday's championship game.  John Fitchett finished second on the squad with 16 points, shooting 6-10 from the field.  Cameron Smith put together a double-double on the afternoon, scoring 13 points with 10 rebounds.  He also finished with five assists to his credit.  Andrew Daniels completed the contest with 11 points, with three rebounds and two assists.  Julian Ramirez led all players in assists in the game, dishing out six.

Roanoke trailed by two entering halftime, with Eacho already scoring 16 of his 34 points in the first half.  Mike Major led the Monarchs in the first 20 minutes, going 4-6 from the floor for 12 points.  T.J. Gill scored just nine of his 25 in the first half, with a perfect 3-3 mark from behind the arc.  Through the first four minutes of the second half, Roanoke had tied up the contest at 47-47, with a jumper from John Fitchett.  Fitchett's two started a 9-0 run through the 13:07 mark, capped by a layup by Eacho for the Maroons to lead 54-47.  Roanoke increased the lead to nine, 59-50 after a trey from Smith at the 11:41 mark.  By the nine minute mark, Methodist had cut the lead to three, 61-58, after a trey by TJ Gill and free throws from Jabari Brown.

The Monarchs brought the contest back to a one point game after Mike Major hit a jumper with 2:39 to play in the contest.  However, the next Roanoke basket, which proved to be Daniel Eacho's 1000th point, gave the Maroons the fuel to hold on to the lead.  The Maroons did not allow the Monarchs to get closer than four points for the remainder of the contest, as Roanoke won the 2014 Dick Leftwich V-Foundation Classic, 89-82 over Methodist.

Methodist had two players that tallied 20 or more points in the game.  T.J. Gill came off the bench to score 25 points, shooting 8-13 from the field, including a 7-9 clip from behind the arc.  Mike Major went 8-15 on the floor for 21 points, which included a team-high tying six rebounds.  Desmond Parker finished the game with 15 points, 5-5 from the free throw line, also pulling down six boards.  Chris Vinson was the third Monarch to finish the game with six rebounds, as well as a team-high four assists.

Roanoke outshot Methodist 51.6 to 46.9 percent from the floor, while the Monarchs led from behind the arc 47.8 to 37.5 percent.  The two teams tied on the boards, both pulling down 37 rebounds each.  Roanoke's passing stood out on the court dishing out more assists (19 to 10) and less turnovers (11 to 14).

The Maroons return to action on December 3rd as they open the 2014-15 Old Dominion Athletic Conference season against Hampden-Sydney on the road.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
