GREENSBORO, NC - The Roanoke College women's basketball team went 2-0 in the Guilford College Classic after defeating #18 ranked Christopher Newport on Sunday afternoon. The Maroons open the 2014-15 season with a record of 2-0, while the Captains are 1-1 on the season.
The Maroons match the opening of the 2013-14 season, winning the first two games of the season opening tournament. Roanoke went 2-0 in the Marriott Invitational in Greensboro last season as well. The win today gives new head coach Carla Flaherty her second win the helm of the Maroons. This is the first win for the Maroons over a ranked team since the Maroons defeated #18 Bridgewater College in the 2006-07 season.
Tatum McKee was named MVP of the Guilford College Classic, while
Kelsey Smith was named to the All-Tournament team. McKee finished the afternoon with 18 points, including three made baskets from behind the arc. She also went 7-8 from the free throw line. She also had eight rebounds and two assists.
Kelsey Smith also finished with 18 points in the game, shooting 6-9 from the field, including a 5-7 mark from the free throw line.
Cary Beahm, who led the Maroons in scoring on Saturday night, finished with seven points, along with a career high 12 rebounds.
The Maroons started the first half in an early deficit after Jordan Miller opened up the period with three consecutive three-point baskets to put the Captains ahead 10-4 in the first five minutes of play. Baskets over the next couple of minutes from McKee, Smith and
Markia Beckwith brought the Maroons back within one, 12-11 with 13:43 on the clock. This was all part of a 17-3 run that the Maroons went on through the 7:37 mark, which was capped off by a pair of baskets by
Noreen Mulledy. In the final seven mintues of the contest, Roanoke held Christopher Newport to just nine points, while the Maroons piled on 15 more to take a 15-point 39-25 lead over the Captains at halftime.
With a pair of free throws by
Meghan Gadell and a three-pointer by McKee, the Maroons built the second half lead to 20 points over the #18 Captains in the first two minutes of the second half. The Maroons held at least a 10-point advantage over Christopher Newport until 4:11 remaining in the half, when CNU's Lauren Cox hit a three-pointer to pull the Captains within eight, 66-58. However,
Kanisha Wiley answered with a jumper in the next possession to push the lead back to 10. In fact, Roanoke scored four more points after that to lead 72-58 with 2:55 remaining in the contest. CNU hit only one more basket and a pair of free throws down the stretch as Roanoke picked up the win over Christopher Newport 74-62 on Sunday.
The Captains were led in scoring by Jordan Miller, who scored 14 points off 5-10 shooting, including a 4-8 clip from behind the arc. Makeda Wright tallied 12 points, going along with four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Also in double-figures was Camry Green, who tallied a double-double of 11 points and 17 rebounds.
The Maroons return to action on November 19
th as they travel to take on Averett University. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
