ARLINGTON – The Roanoke College men's basketball team opened the 2014-15 campaign with a 86-57 loss to host school Marymount in the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament. The Maroons open the season with a record of 0-1, while the Saints begin at 1-0.
The Maroons entered the contest with a 5-0 all-time record against the Saints, having most recently won in 2012-13 by the score of 70-65. With the loss, the Maroons are looking to pick up Page Moir's 400
th career win in Sunday's consolation game against SUNY-Brockport.
In the first five minutes of the first half, Roanoke jumped out to a 12-8 advantage after seeing scoring from five different players. Over the next two minutes, Marymount's D'Ondre Stockman hit a pair of three pointers, along with four points from Dmitri Rucker to give the Saints a 20-17 lead over the Maroons. Stockman's three pointer started a 26-6 run for Marymount that ran all the way through the 1:55 mark in the half, with the Saints leading 43-23.
Alexander Weant and
Cameron Smith hit a pair of free throws each down the stretch of the first, but Danny Ferry closed the half with a trey to give the Saints a 46-27 lead at halftime.
Roanoke came out of the gate scoring five points in the first three minutes, spurred by a three pointer by
Andrew Daniels, followed by a layup by
John Fitchett. At the 17:00 mark, Roanoke trailed by 14, 46-32. Over the next five minutes, the Saints went on a 14-5 run that was capped off by a three-pointer by Danny Ferry, making the score 60-39 in favor of the host school. Marymount continued to widen its lead, going on another run, this time 9-2, with
Julian Ramirez putting a stop to the streak by hitting a layup at 7:49. Two minutes later, Weant hit a layup for the Maroons, followed by two free throws putting the Maroons within 26, 73-47.
Eli Sumpter and
Joey Miller hit consecutive layups in the final minutes of the game, as Roanoke trailed 77-51 with 2:03 to play.
Roderick McFarland hit a pair of jumpers in the final minute of the contest, but Roanoke's deficit was too great to overcome at that point, as Roanoke fell 86-57 in the opening game of the season.
Andrew Daniels led the team in scoring, finishing the afternoon with 12 points of off 5-13 shooting from the field. He led the team in three pointers made with two.
Cameron Smith led all players in the contest with eight rebounds, and was followed by both
Alexander Weant and
Joey Miller, who each pulled down four rebounds.
John Fitchett was the second highest scorer for the Maroons in the game, tallying nine points, while Weant had eight. Daniels also led the squad in steals with four, followed by Julian Ramierez with three.
The Saints were led in scoring by D'Ondre Stockman, who finished with 18 points. Dmitri Rucker and Danny Ferry scored in double digits also, tallying 12 and 11 points respectively. Marymount's top three scorers came off of the bench. Antonio Rouse, JC Hoellich, Colin Burkhart and Isaish Grigsby each finished with six rebounds apiece, leading the team in the category. Hoellich led the squad in steals with three, while Grigsby dished out a game high six assists.
The Maroons will be in action on Sunday, November 16
th as they play in the 2014 Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament Consolation Game. The Maroons will play SUNY-Brockport at 11:00 AM.
