VIRGINIA BEACH – The Roanoke College women's soccer team finishes the 2014 campaign after falling to Virginia Wesleyan 2-0 in the 2014 ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Maroons end the season with a record of 11-7-1, while the Marlins advance to the ODAC Semifinals against Lynchburg on Wednesday, November 5
th.
With a record of 11-7-1, the Maroons cap off their ninth consecutive 10-win season. Head coach Phil Benne finishes his 26
th season at the helm of the program with a career win total of 298, ranking amongst the top-12 active coaches. Benne entered the season as the 20
th all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division III.
Marlana Barnard led the Maroons in the 2014 season with nine goals, a tally that ranks 11
th in the ODAC.
Ashley Barnes was second on the team in scoring putting up six goals this season.
Abbe Guarino and
Taylor Sayegh each notched a team-high four assists, while Barnes dished out three in 2014.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot the Maroons 6-5 in the first half, with neither team finding the back of the net for the first 40 minutes. The Marlins took advantage of a corner kick at 42:08 in the first half, as Lauren Shular sailed a ball from the corner straight to the foot of Allie Ketzler. Ketzler fired the shot home, giving Virginia Wesleyan a 1-0 lead entering halftime.
The Marlins saw another opportunity on a free kick in the second half. Ketzler took the free kick that found the head of Kristen Mack, who finished the attempt, tallying the Marlins' second goal of the game. Roanoke was held without a shot in the second half, as the Maroons fell to Virginia Wesleyan 2-0 in the ODAC Quarterfinals.
SierraLynn Johnson and
Linnea Kremer led the Maroons with two shots each, while
Adelyn Fitzgerald took the Maroons remaining attempt.
Carolyn Sarbacher played all 90 minutes in goal, tallying seven saves in the process.
The Marlins were led by Lauren Shular, who finished the contest with four shots, all of which were on goal. Shular was followed by Kristen Mack who took three shots, one of which found the back of the net. Megan Gerhart also played a complete game for Virginia Wesleyan, finishing the contest with three saves.
